Goodbye Bourne & Shepherd: thank you for 176 years of service

Kolkata: Bourne & Shepherd, once an important landmark in the city of Kolkata, was consigned to history after it downed its shutters on Thursday .
The 176-years-old photo studio situated on the S N Banerjee Road in Kolkata, one of the world’s oldest surviving photographic studios, however, failed to receive a warm farewell from the city of black magic.
Bourne & Shepherd was the most successful commercial firm in 19th and early 20th-century India, with its agencies all over India and outlets in London and Paris, including a mail order service.
Some of its photographs of this studio hang in the Smithsonian Institution, National Gallery of Portraits in London, the Cambridge University library.
