Rishikesh: Environmentalist GD Agarwal, who was on fast to ‘save the Ganga’ since June 22, died on Thursday at AIIMS hospital in Rishikesh.

The noted environmentalist reportedly had a heart attack.

Agarwal was a former faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. He was on fast since June 22 and left drinking water on October 9. He was forcefully admitted to hospital in AIIMS-Rishikesh on October 10.

“I was with him. He was weak but reasonably okay. He was talking. And all of a sudden, he left us. Doctors say that it was because of a heart attack,” said Prem, a caretaker who had been with Agarwal for years.
