Former CBI director resigns, refuses to take charge as DG

New Delhi: Former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director, Alok Kumar Verma, on Friday refused to take charge as Director General and has furnished his resignation from the Indian Police Service (IPS), according to a source.

His resignation came the next day of his removal from the post of CBI director.

Alok Verma was shunted out as Chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after a marathon meeting of high-powered selection committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

A 2-1 decision by a Selection Committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with its other two members being Leader of Congress Mallikarjun Kharge and Supreme Court judge AK Sikri on Thursday decided to remove Verma from the post of CBI Director. This came a day after the Supreme Court revoked the Centre's order to divest Verma from his powers.

It is to be mentioned that, Verma had approached the apex court after he was removed from the agency's helm on the midnight of October 23 following his tussle with CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana became public.

However, Alok showed his dismay over his unceremonious removal from the CBI, in a letter to Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) .

"Natural justice was scuttled and the entire process was turned upside down in ensuring that the undersigned is removed from the post of the Director," read the letter.

Verma's tenure as a Director General of fire services was to end on January 21.
