New Delhi: The former Union Minister and national president of Indian Union Muslim League E Ahamed has passed away in the wee hours on Wednesday. He was immediately rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi after he suffered a cardiac arrest, when both the houses of parliament were being jointly addressed by President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday.

The 78-year-old was put on ventilator and at around 0230 hours he breathed his last.

According to the senior doctor of RML, "E Ahamed has passed away at 2030 hours. His body has been taken to AIIMS hospital for embalming (a method to preserve a corpse from decaying) as the facility is not available at RML."

Ahamed's family alleged that they were not allowed to meet him.

"I am not being allowed to see my father, it's my right. How can I not be allowed," son of E Ahamed said.

  • His body will be taken to Kerala today.
  • He was also the Member of Parliament from Mallapuram constituency of Kerala.
  • His last rite will be held on Thursday in Kannaur.

President Pranab Mukherjee condole his death. He took to twitter to express his grief and posted, “E. Ahamed was a friend and colleague of long years."
