The deceased were identified as Anubhav Chandra from Bihar, Aditya Patel from Uttar Pradesh, Kennath Jose from Wayanad (Kerala) and Benny Abraham from Perumbavoor (Kerala).

The students were in Kerala for a seven-day tour and were staying at a resort owned by their classmate Maria Benny.

According to the police,"The incident occurred when Aditya and Anubhav were caught in a whirlpool and Benny and Kennath tried to save them."

All four drowned bodies were retrieved by the police and were shifted to mortuary in Perumbavoor.

It may be mentioned that though the water level is very low, the river Paniyeli Poru is said to be dangerous due to deep gaps between the slippery rocks.
