New Delhi: Despite the improvement in the air quality in Delhi-NCR due to the change in wind direction, it remained in the severe to very poor category. The layer of smog lightened on Sunday.

At the same time, the Delhi government has said that to reduce pollution, it will present a proposal regarding lockdown in the Supreme Court on Monday. According to SAFAR, the air quality will improve marginally due to the restrictions imposed on various human activities in Delhi-NCR under GRAP.

Delhi-NCR AQI at 'very poor':

The Air Quality Index (AQI) of all the cities of NCR moved from severe category to very poor level as compared to last 24 hours. This brought some relief to the people. The highest AQI of Ghaziabad was recorded at 331 and that of Gurugram was the lowest at 287. At the same time, Delhi's air quality remained very poor with an AQI of 330.

Regarding the reduction in pollution, SAFAR says that due to the weakening of the wind speed from the northwest on the upper surface, the stubble smoke from neighboring states could not reach Delhi. The pollution level in Delhi-NCR has improved as the share of stubble smoke dropped from 31 per cent to 12 per cent in 24 hours.

However, the cases of stubble burning in neighboring states increased from 3,157 to 3,445 during this period. Meanwhile, the improvement in wind speed disintegrated the pollutants.

The agencies estimate that there will be no major change in the pollution level in the next two days. The air quality will remain in between very poor and severe level. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), people of Faridabad and Gurugram, who were breathing in severe level quality for two days, got a big relief. The air in both the cities reached the poor level with an improvement of more than a hundred points.
