Nirbhaya Case: Capital punishment or just another "Tareekh"?

New Delhi: Moments after the Delhi High Court adjourned hearing in Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case to January 24, the court recalled its order and said it will hear the case on Thursday.

The Delhi High Court had adjourned the hearing after one of the four convicts, Pawan Gupta, filed a plea claiming of being juvenile in 2012 when the gruesome gang-rape and murder case took place.

His lawyer AP Singh had argued that he should hence be treated under the Juvenile Justice Act and be given a month's time to submit fresh documents.

Objecting to the adjournment by the Court, the lawyer representing Nirbhaya's parents side filed a plea to hear the matter soon.

Recently one more review petition filed by Akshay Kumar Singh, another convict in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, was also rejected by the Supreme Court.

It is to be mentioned that five people were convicted in the Nirbhaya case: Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Kumar Singh and Ram Singh. The sixth person held guilty was a juvenile and was released after serving three years in a reform home. Meanwhile, Ram Singh was found hanging in his barrack in the Tihar Jail.

The Supreme Court has already rejected the review petitions of all four convicts facing death sentence and currently serving their term in the Tihar Jail.
