Cyclone Tauktae has intensified into very severe cyclonic storm. The storm has hit coastal parts of Goa. Mumbai is expected to see heavy rainfall today afternoon. In view of the storm, the city has shifted over 500 Covid patients from its jumbo centres. The cyclone is expected to cause heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of Gujarat. Cyclone Tauktae hits coastal parts of Goa.

Extremely heavy rainfall is predicted in Junagadh and Gir Somnath and heavy to very heavy rain at a few places in the districts of Saurashtra, Kutch and Diu, namely Gir Somnath, Diu, Junagadh, Porbandar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Amreli, Rajkot, and Jamnagar.

73 villages affected in Karnataka

Karnataka: Due to the cyclone, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was observed over 6 districts, 3 coastal districts and 3 Malnad districts in the past 24 hours. So far, 4 people have lost their lives and 73 villages affected, according to the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).

Latest update from IMD

In its latest update posted this morning, the weather department said the very severe cyclonic storm over east central Arabian Sea moved nearly northwards with a speed of about 11 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today (May 16) over east central Arabian Sea, about 130 km west-southwest of Panjim-Goa, 450 km south of Mumbai, 700 km south-southeast of Veraval (Gujarat) and 840 km southeast of Karachi (Pakistan). "It is very likely to intensify during next 24 hours. It is very likely to move north-north-westwards and reach Gujarat coast in the evening hours of 17th& cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva (Bhavnagar district) around 18th May early morning," it said.
