New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has swung into action amid fears of a shortage of coal in the country and the resulting power crisis. He called a high level meeting on Monday.

Union Power Minister RK Singh, Coal Minister Prahlad Joshi and officials of both the ministries have reached the Home Ministry to attend this meeting. Officials of NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) are also attending the meeting.

Coal Shortage:

Several states in the country have warned of disruption of power supply in view of acute shortage of coal. But, the Coal Ministry maintains that there is enough dry fuel available in the country to meet the demand for power generation plants. The ministry has rubbished any fears about power supply disruption as completely false. However, 13 thermal power plants in the country were closed on Sunday due to shortage of coal.

"Any fear of disruption in power supply is entirely misplaced," the ministry said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said about the shortage of coal that it is true that there is a problem. Depending on our requirement, we will either buy it from NTPC or from private companies. But the supply has been affected. He said that there are some reasons behind this situation. The problem is not only in Bihar, it is everywhere.

Kerala: Decision on power cut after October 19

Kerala Power Minister K Krishnakutty said the state government would take a decision on implementing power cuts after October 19. Presently the state is facing 100 MW power shortage. We are trying to balance the demand-supply through an automated management system and are buying power at a higher price.
