Chandigarh Municipal polls: BJP-SAD alliance stands tall

Chandigarh: In yet another major jolt to the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) alliance on Tuesday secured 21 out of total 26 Municipal Corporation seats. Prior to this election, Congress had been ruling the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) for the last 14 years.

The Congress could manage to win only four seats while another seat was won by an independent candidate. Therefore, the alliance has come up with comfortable majority in the Chandigarh Municipal polls.

It may be mentioned that at least 19 votes are required in the mayoral poll to win the seats of mayor, deputy mayor as well as senior deputy mayor. Hence, the two winning parties will have their mayor for the next five years.

Lauding the win in the Chandigarh Municipal polls, BJP President Amit Shah on Tuesday said, "Consistent election wins since November 8 have proved that people have welcomed the demonetisation decision."

Other highlights:

  • BJP had contested on as many as 22 seats whereas, SAD was given four of them.
  • BJP candidate and sitting mayor Arun Sood also managed to win his seat defeating Congress candidate Rajesh Sharma with a margin of over 2,000 votes.
  • The grand old party suffered a major stroke as all its big wings of city politics including three former mayors lost their seats.
