Centre may soon ban use of potassium bromate

New Delhi:The Centre is all-set to ban the use of "cancer-causing" chemical "potassium bromate " in bread manufacturing soon in the wake of a Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) study in Delhi.

The CSE's study, released on Monday, said that almost all brands of bread sold in Delhi markets show the presence of potassium bromate and potassium iodate Rs which are considered hazardous to public health. The use of these chemicals have been banned by many countries of the world.

The proposal to remove potassium bromate from the list of permissible additives was welcomed by several organisations. It is now hoped that the government will soon follow suit in the case of potassium iodate too.
