Bridge collapses near Mahad on Mumbai-Goa highway, 22 missing

Mumbai: Two Maharashtra state corporation buses and more than a dozen two-wheelers went missing after a bridge at river Savitri on the Mumbai-Goa highway collapsed in wee hours on Tuesday. As per the reports, the buses were carrying at least 22 people. The NDRF teams from Mumbai and Pune have been rushed to the incident site to search and rescue the missing residents.

Other details:

  • More than 50 NDRF officers are carrying out the rescue operation
  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken the stock of the situation and is constantly taking the updates from Raigarh Commissioner.
  • No traces of people missing have been found yet.
  • Approximately 80 per cent of the bridge had collapsed

About the bridge:

  • There are two bridges parallel to each other constructed on River Savitri
  • The bridge was constructed during the British era
  • Vehicular traffic has been diverted to second bridge

Raigad Collector confirms that one way traffic is now resumed on the new bridge.
