Bharatiya Janata Party government in Manipur passes floor test

Imphal: The Bharatiya Janata Party government in Manipur headed by N Biren Singh passed the floor test ordered by Governor Najma Heptulla and held on Monday.

The party's first government in the state secured 32 votes, one more than what was required to prove majority in the 60-member assembly.

It had won only 21 seats in the recent assembly elections which was seven short of the number achieved by the Congress. However, some regional parties and one independent assured to support Singh and ,therefore, he staked the claim to form government.

All of them voted for the government, living up to their promises.

In addition to 21 BJP members, four members each of the Naga People's Party and the National People's Front, one member each of the Trinamool Congress and the Lok Janashakti Party and one independent voted in his favour.

This is the third BJP government in the North-east after Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
