Srinagar: Six Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were gunned down, while one IAF Garud personnel was martyred and two Army men sustained injuries in a gunfight on Saturday in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district, an official said.

It is worth mentioning that one of the slain terrorists has been identified as Owaid, who is the son of Abdul Rehman Makki and 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi's nephew. The army personnel have also recovered arms and ammunition after the gunbattle ended.

Defence Ministry Spokesman Col. Rajesh Kalia said troopers of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), special operations group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded Chandergair village in Hajin area of Bandipora district, following information about the presence of militants there.

"As the cordon around the hiding militants was tightened, they fired at the security forces triggering an encounter," Kalia said.
