Avalanche hits Kupwara district, five army personnel missing

Kupwara: Five army personnel were hit by an avalanche at the army post in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Defence PRO Rajesh Kalia, "Five soldiers are trapped under the snow and the rescue operation is underway."

According to the reports, "The authorities had sounded an avalanche warning in the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region."

The avalanche warning has been issued by the District Administration in Baramulla, Kupwara, Kulgam, Ganderbal, Shopian, Anantnag Leh and Kargil districts. The residents are advised not to come out f their houses till the warnings were withdrawn.

More details regarding the incident are awaited.

It may be mentioned that at least ten army jawans have been killed after two avalanches struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Gurez sector on January 26.
