New Delhi: Former Indian Air Force Chief, SP Tyagi was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday for his alleged role in the AgustaWestland VVIP Chopper Scam.

Gautam Khaitan, Delhi-based lawyer and Sanjeev Tyagi alias Julie Tyagi were also arrested by the CBI along with the former IAF Chief.

The CBI officials stated, "all three accused were arrested on the allegations of who accepted illegal gratification for exercising influence through corrupt and or illegal means."

Air Chief Marshal Shashindra Pal Tyagi (SP Tyagi) is the former Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. He had also served as the commanding officer of the Western Air Command of the Air Force.

  • The CBI had registered a case against Tyagi and 18 others, including his cousins and European middlemen, three years ago.
  • Tyagi is alleged of helping AgustaWestland to qualify by reducing the required flying height for VVIP choppers from 6,000m to 4,500m.
  • Investigators say there is an evidence to prove that Air Mashal Tyagi met with a top official of AgustaWestland's parent company Finmeccanica when he was Air Chief.
