New Delhi: A Meghalaya police officer was injured on Wednesday in an attempt to control the situation after large groups of people from the state and neighboring Assam came face-to-face near the disputed inter-state border area. The incident took place at Umlapar in West Karbi Anglong district of Assam, where a group of around 250-300 people from Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district went to meet two persons with whom an Assam police personnel had allegedly mingled on Monday night. was abused. Protesters from across the border damaged a bunker during the protests on Tuesday.

However, on their way to the village, local residents blocked the road and clashed with the people of Meghalaya, a police officer from West Karbi Anglong district said. Ri-Bhoi district's SP N Lamare said that police teams from both the states reached the spot to disperse the crowd. Lamare said that a deputy SP was injured during the scuffle. He was taken to a nearby medical unit and is out of danger now.

Tension prevailed in Umlapar area on Tuesday morning after a personnel of an Assam Police camp allegedly misbehaved with two people from the border state at a post on Monday night. A group of people from Meghalaya on Tuesday allegedly damaged an Assam Police bunker near the inter-state border while protesting the alleged misbehavior. The situation then calmed down after the intervention of senior police officers from both the northeastern neighboring states.
