Kolkata: Anuj Sharma, the Additional Director General (Law & Order), on Tuesday, has been appointed as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, replacing current Police chief Rajeev Kumar.

Rajeev Kumar, however, has been given the charge of West Bengal's Criminal Investigation Department's ADG-IGP.

The former police chief is accused of allegedly withholding some documents related to Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund cases and was summoned by the CBI in connection with the scams in Shillong.

The CBI also attempted to arrest Rajeev Kumar on the orders of probing agency's director Nageswara Rao, to which West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee staged a protest to oppose his arrest.

Later, however, apex Court had to intervene and on February 5 the Supreme Court directed Kumar to cooperate with CBI and ask them to meet in a neutral place i.e. Shillong. The apex court had also said that no coercive step should be taken against Kumar.
