Gandhinagar: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah’s meeting with Patidar community leaders in Surat on Thursday turned chaotic as the supporters of Hardik Patel went berserk vandalizing the furniture amid the affair.

The attendees started chanting “Hardik, Hardik” while Shah along with Union minister Purshottam Rupala was addressing them from the stage. The event, which was planned and organised by prominent Patel businessmen in the city, was primarily aimed at felicitating the BJP leaders of their community for their achievements ahead of the 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls. A group called ‘Patidar Abhiyan Samiti’ was formed by Surat-based businessmen to honour the new BJP chief of the state Jitu Vaghani, deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel and other ministers of the Patel community.

It may be mentioned that the community was asked to oppose the felicitation programme by the Hardik Patel-led 'Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti'.

The BJP chief was in Gujarat’s Surat city to attend a massive rally organised by the party for honouring the new ‘Patel’ ministers in the government which is led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

The rally was not only aimed at showing the party’s strength but pacifying the members of Patidar community who had been clashing with the government over the demand of providing quota in jobs as well as education.
