New Delhi: After Delhi government's prodigal announcement of giving every citizen 15GB data/month by installing 11,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots across the capital by December 16, a grave question of data security has surfaced in the minds of potential beneficiaries.

Though, Public Wi-Fi has many advantages but its drawbacks can't be ignored as it makes your digital life vulnerable to hackers. Yes open Wi-Fi connections are prone to data leak and could let hackers use your valuable information if you are not careful enough.

-First and foremost, don’t use public Wi-Fi for confidential tasks. Yes avoid using public hotspot for banking, paying bills, accessing net-banking accounts, using credit/debit cards, etc. when connected to an open WiFi.

-Prefer sending sensitive information or logging in via websites you know are fully encrypted. Avoid using any untrusted site.

-Always use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) as all your data which passes through that network is via a private tunnel. And that secures your confidential data from hackers.

-Smart way to remain protected is by installing plugins and browser add-ons as they provide security to your personal information with data encryption.

-Never browse any untrusted site.

-Make sure that your device’s built-in firewall is active as it helps you against cyber attacks.

-Last but not the least, always ensure that you are using latest version of your browser and don't forget to modify your browser’s privacy settings.
