Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti made a major announcement here on Friday that the Armed Forces (special powers) Act ( AFSPA ) enforced in the state for the past 16 years would be withdrawn if peace returned to the valley.

She ruled out possibility of either the Centre or the Bhartiya Janta Party, a coalition partner, having any opposition to it. “There is a written agreement between our party and the BJP” in this regard. So there is nothing which can go against it”, she said at a memorial function.

Her statement has been lapped up by a large number of Kashmirs who have been demanding withdrawal of armed forces from the valley.

The act was enforced in the state in the wake of violence and inability of other forces to contain it. The situation at present remains the same.
