Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline extended till August 31

New Delhi: The government on Monday extended the deadline for linking Aadhaar with PAN (Permanent Account Number) till August 31.

Announcing the same, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) also pointed out that the Income Tax Returns (ITRs) will only be processed after Aadhaar-PAN linking will be done.

The Finance Ministry, in a series of tweets, clarified that for e-filing of ITR, the users can quote Aadhaar or acknowledgement number but the linking must be completed before August 31.

Earlier in the day on Monday, the government also extended the last date of filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) till August 5. Citing the reason behind the move, the tax department said that the deadline has been extended in the wake of the difficulties faced by taxpayers.

According to a senior official, the decision to extend the deadline was taken in a meeting joined by the revenue department and the CBDT, which was held in the finance ministry on Monday.

Under the Section 139AA of the I-T Act, it has been made mandatory to mention the Aadhaar number or the application number for I-T returns filed on or after July 1 this year. The Supreme Court upheld the decision on June 9.

So, the people who do not have Aadhaar or its application number are in a spot of bother, as the taxpayers who earn more than Rs 5 lakh are bound to file I-T returns online.
