New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday permitted the release of ‘Udta Punjab’ after refusing the plea of a Non Government Organisation (NGO), which sought stay on its release. The apex Court has not interfered with the Bombay High Court’s decision and now the flick, which was clouded with controversies, will release on Friday.

A vacation bench of justices Adarsh Kumar and L Nageswara Rao said they were not going into the merits of the matter in the absence of the High Court judgement.

Earlier, an NGO named Human Rights Awareness Association had intervened to obstruct the film’s release.

The Apex Court had asked the NGO to approach to Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh in lead roles, ‘Udta Punjab’ revolves around the drug epidemic among the youth of Punjab.
