Aligarh: Amid controversies and a lot of hue and cry over its subject, Manoj Bajpayi starrer film—‘Aligarh’ released on Friday.

The Hansal Mehta directed film is based on the life of a homosexual professor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who died under mysterious conditions.

Cast:

Versatile actor Manoj Bajpayi is playing the lead role of AMU Homosexual Professor while Shahid fame actor Rajkumar Rao has sported the role of a journalist.

Story line:

The story of the film is based on the life of AMU professor Dr Srinivasan Sirag and his homosexuality who had committed suicide after a sting operation of his making out with a rickshaw puller created a buzz in media.

The film has been shot in various locations of Bareilly district.

Was selected for International film festival:

The film was premiered in International Film Festival and it released across India on Friday.

About professor:

  • Dr Srinivasan Sirag was a professor of Indian language at Modern Indian Language institute of AMU in Nagpur of Maharashtra.
  • His identity of being a gay was revealed in 2010 through a sting operation.
  • The sting operation created a lot of buzz in media.
  • AMU administration suspended him after it came to their notice.

Committed suicide after two months:

  • The professor committed suicide after two months of the sting operation at his residence in Janakpuri area of the district.
  • He was appointed in AMU in 1988 and was a very polite man.
  • He was fond of writing articles, doing paintings and watching movies.
  • A case was registered against six persons through court.
  • Four of the accused were senior officials of AMU.
  • He was in relationship with rickshaw puller Irfan Roshan.
  • Adil Raza was the scribe who did the sting operation.
  • Adil had been jailed for six months in this case.
