New Delhi: Professor Tariq Mansoor has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University by President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday.

Principal of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of AMU, Mansoor will succeed Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah, who will retire on May 17.

Mansoor said, "I do not know anything about this as I have not received an official communication or order from the government yet."

The 60-year-old Tariq has been associated with the university since 35 years.

It may be mentioned that he was chosen from the list of three names. The other contenders were Executive Director and Chief Scholar of US-India Policy Institute, Washington Abu Saleh Sharif and CEO of Welcome Trust and DBT India Alliance Shahid Jameel.

The university said that Sharif and Jameel had no experience as they have never served as a professor as directed by the University Grants commission (UGC). Later, the matter was taken to Supreme court where it refused to interfere saying all three candidates fulfilled academic guidelines.
