The Supreme Court Friday dismissed a review petition by six opposition-ruled states against its August 17 order allowing the conduct of NEET (UG) and JEE (Mains) entrance examinations amidst Covid-19 pandemic.

Rejecting the plea for further postponement of exams, the apex court, had in its August 17 order, stated that “life cannot be stopped” and the “career of students cannot be put in jeopardy”.

In a situation, the review plea had said, “where there is absolutely no classroom teaching, the decision of the Union Government to conduct examinations on such a massive scale reveals non-application of mind and is unreasonable, arbitrary and capricious exercise of power.”

JEE Main-NEET:

Six Ministers of opposition-ruled states moved the Supreme Court seeking review of its order permitting the Centre to conduct NEET 2020 and JEE Main 2020 in September Amid COVID-19 pandemic.

The review plea has been filed by ministers from West Bengal (Moloy Ghatak), Jharkhand (Rameshwar Oraon). Rajasthan (Raghu Sharma), Chhattisgarh (Amarjeet Bhagat), Punjab (B S Sidhu) and Maharashtra (Uday Ravindra Sawant).

At a meeting convened by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, seven chief ministers of non-BJP ruled states decided to jointly move the Supreme Court on the issue of JEE and NEET exams.

Demands For JEE And NEET Postponement

The Supreme Court on August 17 allowed NTA to go ahead with its plan. To conduct JEE Main and NEET 2020 as per schedule in September. On August 24, the court rejected another plea seeking online NEET 2020 exam centres for overseas students.

The JEE (Main) is scheduled to be held between September 1 and 6, while the JEE (Advanced) on September 27. In addition, the NEET will be held on September 13.
