Rekha Gupta becomes new Chief Minister of Delhi
Rekha Gupta is the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi.
Rekha Gupta took oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi in a grand ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday. The swearing-in ceremony began at 12:05 pm. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena first administered the oath of office to Rekha Gupta. After her, her six cabinet colleagues took oath. Rekha Gupta is the fourth woman Chief Minister of Delhi.
Sushma Swaraj holds the record of becoming the first woman Chief Minister of BJP. Sushma took over as the Chief Minister of Delhi in the year 1998. However, her tenure was only 52 days. After this, BJP was out of power in the elections.
Under the leadership of Uma Bharti, the Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Congress in the assembly elections held in Madhya Pradesh in the year 2003. BJP was successful in getting a one-sided majority with 173 seats, while Congress was reduced to just 38 seats. After this strong victory, Uma Bharti became the Chief Minister but she could not stay on this post even for a year. Due to differences with LK Advani, she had to leave the post just 259 days after becoming the CM.
Along with Uma Bharti, in the year 2003, BJP won the Rajasthan Assembly elections under the leadership of Vasundhara Raje. Vasundhara successfully completed her 5-year term. After this, she once again became the Chief Minister in the year 2013. This time also she remained the CM for the entire 5 years.
When Narendra Modi left the post of Chief Minister of Gujarat after becoming the Prime Minister of the country, Anandi Ben Patel was made the next CM. She remained the Chief Minister for the remaining 2 years and 77 days of the Gujarat government.
