Mumbai: Depressed over the decision of Jaat Panchayat (community court), a man allegedly hanged himself to death within his house in Pune city of Maharashtra on Monday. The panchayat ordered to socially boycott him along with his family.

“The deceased has been identified as Arun Naikuji, a member of the Gavali community,” said the police.

Arun’s family was boycotted after his brother helped one of his friends enter the wedlock with a girl from different community.

“We have booked Mankappa Aurange, Vithtthal Pailwan, Vahappa Pailwan, Kisan Janubas as well as other members of Veershaiya Lingayat Gavali Samaj Jaat Panchayat under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 34 (common intention) and 306 (abetment to suicide),” said an official from Chandan Nagar police station.

Other highlights:

  • The family was allegedly ostracised by the panchayat two years ago.
  • They were not allowed to take part in any of the community’s happenings.
  • According to his brother, the victim on Sunday last went to the panchayat members to talk in this regard and was insulted there.
