Dimapur, Nagaland: A Bihar-based businessman was arrested here on Tuesday allegedly for carrying Rs 3.5 crore in banned currencies.

The man, identified as A Singh from Bihar's Munger district, was travelling alone in a chartered jet which took off from Sirsa in Haryana earlier in the day on Tuesday.

According to the airport officials, central security agencies and CISF officials questioned him and later the case was handed over to local Income Tax officials.

"CISF officials took action after receiving some prior information and intercepted the passenger when he landed here. Earlier, the money recovered was said to be Rs 5.5 crore, but later the I-T officials confirmed the final amount with him to be Rs 3.5 crore. The I-T department is probing to find out the source of the currency," they said.

The security agencies and the airport guarding Central Industrial Security Force have launched a special vigil in the wake of the demonetisation of the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes by the NDA government.
