Dhaka: Another case of violent attack on activist and minority religious groups in Muslim majority nations came to light when a Hindu temple worker was hacked to death in Western Bangladesh on Friday.

Shayamananda Das, a priest at the Radhamadan Gopal Bigraha Mathin Jhenaidah district of Bangladesh, was killed by three men while walking on a highway adjacent to his temple, the police said.

According to Gopinath Kanjilal, the Deputy Police Chief of the district, “Three men on motorcycle hacked Das on his neck three times. A big stabbing mark was also found on his head.”

He died after he was brought to Hospital, said the Deputy Police Chief.

About Shayamananda Das:

  • According to the Police officials, Das who was also known as Babaji, was a 50 year old man who helped conducting prayers at the temple.
  • He used to travel from one temple to another to serve the Hindu devotees, the officials told.
  • Police said that no group has claimed responsibility of the attack, but homegrown Islamist militants are being under suspicion as the pattern of the killing was similar to ones carried out by local Islamist militants.
