In a tragic incident, a senior IPS officer from Assam died by suicide after his wife died from cancer. According to the official sources, the wife of the Home Secretary of Assam died while fighting cancer in the ICU of a private hospital in Guwahati. A few minutes later, the IPS hubby Shiladitya Chetia asked the staff for privacy to sit near his wife's body and pray. As soon as everyone went out, he committed suicide by shooting himself. Everyone is shocked and upset by this tragic incident. 44-year-old IPS Shiladitya Chetia had received the gallantry medal from the President.

According to the report, Chetia's wife Agamoni Borbarua (40) died at 4:25 pm in Nemcare Hospital. After 10 minutes, Chaitiya went to the ICU cabin of his wife, asking for some privacy from the medical staff and saying that he wanted to sit next to his wife's body and pray for her. After this, the medical staff left and in a few moments everyone heard the sound of gunshots.

Nemcare's Managing Director Hitesh Barua said, "We quickly ran to the ICU cabin and we saw that he was lying next to his wife's body and we tried our best to save him but we could not. He had shot himself."

Hitesh said that Agamoni was undergoing treatment in the hospital for the last two months. He said, "Three days ago, his condition had deteriorated a lot. We had explained his condition to Chaitiya and he understood it." The couple got married on May 12, 2013 and both of them did not have any children.

Assam Home and Political Secretary Shiladitya Chetia, who shot himself minutes after his wife died in a hospital, has faced many unfortunate events in his life in recent times, of which his wife's death was perhaps the most ruthless blow, said former Assam Police DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, now the state's Chief Information Commissioner.

"He was like my younger brother", said Mahanta, who rushed to the hospital as soon as he came to know about the incident. He said, "He has had a lot of troubles in his life... He had lost his mother and mother-in-law some time ago. He was taking care of his wife and was in Chennai for her treatment. I was in touch with him but I had no idea that he would take such a step."

DGP GP Singh informed about Chetia's death by posting on X. He said, "In an unfortunate turn of events, Shiladitya Chetia, IPS 2009 batch Home and Political Secretary took his own life this evening, minutes after learning about the death of his wife who was battling cancer. The entire Assam Police family is in mourning at this time." Chetia, whose father was also a police officer, has served as Superintendent of Police in Tinsukia, Nalbari, Kokrajhar and Barpeta.
