Police said that the ill-fated bus was carrying pilgrims from Bhavnagar in Gujarat and was on its way to the religious town of Mathura.

Police said that the bus developed some mechanical problems around five in the morning near Hantara in Bharatpur and the driver parked the bus by the side of the road awaiting mechanics to repair the bus.

Many passengers also came out of the bus and stood on the side of the road when a speeding truck, which was coming from Jaipur, rammed into the bus and mowed down several passengers killing many of them on the spot.

It was a horrific scene on the Jaipur-Agra National Highway after the accident as the dead bodies were scattered on the road. The accident triggered a massive jam on the Highway as the ambulances carried the dead to the mortuary and the injured to the hospitals.

Police sources said that the driver of the truck fled from the spot after the accident and efforts were on to trace him. A case in this regard was registered with the police and the next of the kin of the deceased were being contacted.

The highway was later opened for traffic around three hours after the accident, police said. All the deceased were residents of Bhavnagar town in Gujarat, the police added.
